Founded May 15th, 1991, the Alpatha Healing Center young Gay and Lesbian support group recently observed its first anniversary. The group was established to provide a means by which young Gay men, Lesbians and Bisexuals could interact with their peers in an informal setting.
The support group, established to provide support for 18-21-year-olds, was made possible through a grant from The Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services. The group is available at no cost to participants as a result of this funding.
The atmosphere of the suport group is very relaxed and social. Members discuss various topics and offer advice for each other. One advantage of the group is that participants can be free to speak about anything. The co-facilitators, Pat Daniels and Christopher Ohm, insure that the group is a place where people can feel safe, both physically and emotionally.
In addition to regular weekly meetings, speakers are occationally invited to present relevant material. Past presenters have included the Columbus AIDS Task Force, Stonewall Union, and various members of the professional Gay and Lesbian community.
The support group meets Wednesday evenings, 6 PM, at Alpatha Healing Center, 815 North High Street, Suite A. Meetings last approximately 1 1/2 hours. Questions regarding the group should be directed to Pat Daniels at that address, or by calling 294-7979.
